Mercy and compassion,
both of which are associated with Avalokiteshvara,
are fundamental human values whatever
the faith or creed of the person; the
more so in this time when in different
parts of the world one sees tension between
and within different faiths. Similarly
important are the values of peace and
harmony mentioned in the Preface as values
illustrated by this Exhibition. It is
great to have here in this Exhibition
a diverse range of beautifully executed
works of art giving expression to these
important principles and values through
the talent of the artists who created
them. They testify to the depth of artistic
skill that has been present through this
part of Asia since ancient times. I commend
Paul Kan for making possible the public
exhibition of these lovely and reflective
works. They serve to remind us of the
very important principles and values associated
with Avalokiteshvara, while at the same
time we admire the sheer artistry and
beauty of these old works.
