Kodo, the Japanese “Way of Incense”

Incense cultures have evolved alongside the development of civilization. The incense culture of every nation is a unique product of their respective historical experiences, geographical environment, religious traditions as well as culture and customs. The Japanese nation, which is famous for its subtle and exquisite art, values “Kodo” as one of the three traditional arts of refinement along with “Kado” (flower arrangement) and “Chado” (tea ceremony). According to historical records, Japanese “Kodo” originated from China: the incense culture was brought to Japan by a Chinese scholar-monk named Kanjin during his visits to Japan for the propagation of Buddhism which took place during the prosperous years of the Tang Dynasty.
